Like most of us the origional factory steel wheels on the MGTD's were made of poor grade steel and finding a undamaged, unbent replacement is nearly imposible.  Past 5 years I've located, restored and replaced 5 different origional replacement wheels with minimal sucess.  Been told that modern tire changing equimpment had a natural tendancy to bend or warp the wheels.  Currently i still need 2 new wheels for my ride.  With out of round wheels the car shakes and bounces when approachingt 60mph.

Has anyone considered grinding off the rivits off the center part of the MG wheel.  Locating a more modern wheel, possible even a 6" 15" wheel from a volkswagon or similar slightly wider wheel, removing it's center wheel structure and replacing it with the origioal MG centerpiece.  From what I would estimate by doing this would guarantee a wheel of more modern metal, a slightly larger (but unnoticeable) wheel with better road handling and reliability.  Any thoughts or suggestions on this conversion?  I believe in driving my car and tired of the problems with it's origional wheels.

There are indeed a number of wheel repair places who can do this sort of thing. They generally have tube or sheet which they would use to make the cylindrical section and bead sections which they then weld on. This is all done in a lathe like fixture. There are firms which will make any wheel you want, usually for racing purposes, for any bolt circle, from steel. These are pretty tough. When I raced dirt cars I used to have them made for about fifty bucks a piece. I'm sure it's a bunch more now. It seems to me the place was in Oklahoma. Maybe it's time to let your fingers do the googling.

My steel wheel rims were nicked & out of round.  I took all 5 to Stockton Wheel in Stockton, CA.  They welded my inner rims to new outer rims and powdercoated them silver that is very close to original.  The new outer rims are tubeless.  In fact, the new outers are so well done, they require no outer wheel weights-only a small inside weight.  I had this done 5 years ago.  At the time, they charged  $95.00/rim for the new outers, including mounting & balancing my tires.  The powder coating was a little pricey at $45.00/wheel, but more durable than paint.

StocktonWheel. We had them redo some 1939 Morgan steel "Easyclean" wheels for us. They do good work. They've also widened a set of TD wheels for a special application. I'd give 'em a holler. Good thinking, Charles
