    Dual Pipes

I always loved the way early Triumphs had the twin pipes sticking out the back of there cars.I would like to do something like this on my 74 midget. Has anyone put daul mufflers, pipes, etc... on your midget.I once saw a guy with a 78 MGB with side pipes on each side! I thought that was pretty cool.Cool

    Re: Dual Pipes

    James,

I know of no dual pipe system for the Midget. As a matter of performance, dual pipes would be a detriment. On the other hand, I had a '72 Midget which I put an "ANSA" "Stinger Tip" muffler on. It had a two pipe outlet at the rear and produced a most healthy, if not a little snarly exhaust note.

Spend your money on a good long center branch header and free flow system. You will be much happier.

    Just my two cents..........Smile

    James:

Moss carries a rear muffler assembly for the 1500 Midget that has two pairs of chromed pipes. Thinking about it, there should not be too much of a problem installing it on an earlier car. The muffler goes across the rear of the car behind the fuel tank, there are no structural differences between the 1275 and 1500 car so it should fit. Then it is just a question of getting a muffler shop to connect it up.

It's not a direct bolt on, but it would be interesting to give it a try. I think it would look pretty cool too!

    Re: Dual Pipes

James, the problem is that the room at the rear of the car around the fuel tank is limited and the car sits too low for mufflers under the floor. The 1500 muffler assembly might give you the look you're after , but it doesn't sound real sporty in my opinion. Probably the best for looks, sound, and size for the available area is the "Monza" tip and muffler. This takes the single pipe from the engine into the muffler and comes out with two pipes ending in chrome tips with a nice yellow band about 5" up from the end and then flat black beyond. Looks very nice from the rear and sounds pretty good, a little louder than stock, but with a good sports car growl.

    Re: Dual Pipes

I know the Maniflow header for the 1500 is a 4-2-1 design, with the final merge coming from a separate Y-pipe after the header turns under the engine. Before I found out the header won't clear the smog-laden water-heated single Z-S manifold (which has since been replaced with a dual-SU manifold and a pair of Mikunis), I was contemplating running a pair of 1 5/8" pipes straight from the header, instead of using the last Y-pipe, for true dual exhaust! Couldn't figure out how I was going to squeeze two mufflers in the space provided, however. Pretty sure a pair of straight pipes would definitely be snarly, if not outright obnoxious!

It's cold, damp, dark, and drafty with the top up and headlights on... British motoring at its best!
