    Re: Engine trouble lurking?

Just heard today that the crank & rods will be ready on Monday.

Meanwhile I decided to drag the heater box out from its 41 year resting place and give it a makeover. Needless to say all the grommets and foam packing had disintegrated. Grommets for the radiator pipe were found at the hardware store, as was some suitable draught excluder foam to make new packing pieces to hold the radiator firmly in the box again. The motor was cleaned up, it's bearings de-gummed and relubed commutator polished, then all parts were de rusted, primed and repainted. It's all back together ready to go back in the car with new control cables.

    Quite satisfying really.

Well, finally the crank is back, and looks gorgeous. Just had time to fit a speedy sleeve on the rear oil seal surface, and put the woodruff keys for the timing gear and front pulley back in place. It's now safely back in a polythene bag, waiting patiently for its final cleanup and return to the block.

The rods have been reconditioned as well - with the big ends honed back to round. The piston pin bushes were well within spec, so no attention needed there. Its all ready to go back together with 0.010" undersized main and rod bearings.

    Re: Engine trouble lurking?

Blimey, a catalogue of diversions (few of them automotive) have kept me away from the business end of a torque wrench until today... Anyway, end plates, timing gear, tensioner, cover, pulley and flywheel are back on the block. Hopefully tomorrow should see the remaining engine assembly completed.

    Cheers,

    Ed

    Re: Engine trouble lurking?

Guys, as has been said before, this is truly a valuable log of an enthusiasts search for the source of a problem and will act as a guide and an inspiration for the rest of us.

Now I need to find a workshop in Vancouver offering the same services that Ed has found, anyone know of such a facility?? I had sort of thought that I would try and do my own conrod/piston/gudgeonpin replacement but Id feel happier if I got the professionals to do it, press fit, special tools etc.

    Keep up the quest Ed!

    Re: Engine trouble lurking?

I found the place that did my machine work through a reputable local garage mechanic. He recommended a nearby workshop that I doubt I'd have found by myself. He refurbished the rods, but sent the crank out to another specialist. I'd advise talking to a few places to find out who has automotive machine shop facilities - It's all there, you just have to find the right people.

    Good luck with your projects

    Cheers,

    Ed

P.S. Got my cylinder head on today!

    Re: Engine trouble lurking?

OK, the last lap is ahead of me now !

Final preparations went OK this morning, then gearbox offered up to the engine with minimal trouble and bolted up.

After that it was time to dust off the hoist, and ease things in to place. The load leveller made this so easy. I now have all the mounts & crossmember bolted up, the clutch slave back in place, but awaiting propshaft & exhaust, radiator etc...

Hopefully the finish is in sight for tomorrow.
