Hi

Anyone know of a trick to set a Mini's timing accurately??  I removed the inspection cover to expose the markings on the flywheel.  However you cannot get your head in to see!  So, got a small mirror and could see the marks fantastically.  That was until I started the car and got the strobe going... With all the flashing in the mirror, against the gearbox and trying to see the marks - it was nigh on impossible to ensure any accuracy!

Short of doing a "Honey I shrunk the Kids" so I can pop one in the engine bay - is there a trick to be able to see the marks clearly??

The cover on the flywheel is usually used to find TDC! for timing the car use the bottom pulley (under the rad) and there should be a timing mark on the timing gear cover (usually a set of teeth) the teeth go up in degrees! I do my timing by ear but that takes about 20 years of practice...lol

Thanks Oz!  Shoulda thought about looking in an awkward spot!

Unfortunately there are no such marks on my Mini!  So, I had to get inventive with a mirror, thin paint brush, some white paint and some serious dexterity.  I was then able to set the timing with some accuracy.

When you get old like me you will be able to set the timing by ear...lol

haven't used a timing light in 10 years
