1964 TR4 Fuel Tank Sending Unit Empty/Full Ohms Specs

I'm trying to replace the Lucas fuel gauge on my 1964 TR4 with a VDO gauge so it'll match the other VDO gauges (Oil Pressure, Temp, Volts) on my car.  My options on the fuel gauge are: 1) An Empty/Full, 0-90 Ohms gauge, or 2) An Empty/Full, 10-180 Ohms gauge.  I don't see any sending unit specs in the Official Triumph Workshop Manual.  The only thing on the top of the sending unit itself is "Smiths Motor Accessories, Ltd., England, and either a "I.F." or "T.F." and the numbers "1002/005" below the letters "I/T.F.".

Does anyone out there know the specs on this original (?) sending unit, so I can get the correct fuel gauge.  I'd really appreciate any feed back I could get.  Thanks in advance.....Chris

    Hi,

I had about the same problem. Incorrect reading.

I did open up the sender and bended the cursor.

Now I have 16 Ohms with a full tank and 280 Ohms when empty.

    The reading is now correct.

    Good luck with it

Paul, Thanks for the info.  Could you possibly have your # of Ohms reversed?  The specs on the VDO gauges were either 0 or 10 Ohms on empty and 90 or 180 Ohms on full.  These were just their options on two of their different fuel gauges.  Maybe they won't work with this sending unit or maybe I would just have to reverse the two wires coming from the sender?  What type of car did you get your specs off of, was it a Triumph or ?  I was trying to not have to pull the tank and the sending unit out of the car if I could get around it.  Maybe I'll just have to completely fill the tank, then see if I can get a reading off the wires.  I can do that without pulling the sending unit out.

Does anyone else out there have any experience with this sending unit or sending units in other Triumphs of about the same year?

    Thanks in advance ... Chris

I'm aboslutly sure the Ohms are correct, also the reading

My car is Negative earth 1964 LHD and has the original JAEGER instruments, (as also original the Amps is LUCAS!)

If you have the Haynes book you can see page 229: tank empty = full resistance; tank full = mimimum resistance

I did replace the voltgae stabiliser, when that one gives irregular tension, the reading will not be OK.

The wiringdiagram is the same as my Spitfire but the gauge is different SMITHS, so there is full resistance for a full tank

With VDO I have no expirience.

    Regards

    Paul
