Master or Slave?

    Master or Slave?

My clutch pedal will disengage the tranny for about 1 second before the clutch plates begin to re-mate. This is good in a way. Paraphrasing the words of motorbill, " your foot should be on fire while depressing the clutch"! I've been shifting very quickly!

My question is, is there a way to definitely determine which is leaking, the master or slave?

    davey,

Is your left shoe wet and smelly? If so, it's the master. Or, when you lay under the slave cylinder and peel back the boot, does your eye suddenly sting like heck? Then, it's the slave. Could even be both. Then you have sting and stink...

Seriously, when these rather simple hydraulic systems begin to fail, a leak is all but certain. Don't forget to check the hose and fittings as well for loss of fluid. Any help?

Since I haven't seen any signs of outright leaking, I thougtht the fluid was just passing by the o-rings on either the master, slave, or both.

Could this be a possibility, since I have neither sting nor stink?

Actually, maybe I just need a good 18th century barber for a good BLEED?

    Re: Master or Slave?

    davey,

The only other possibility I can imagine is that the "foot seal" at the very end of the piston assembly is passing fluid. This is not usually going to result in the slow bleed back you describe, but I guess it could. If you have peeled back the boots of both cylinders and found no leaking fluid, I'd rebuild or replace the master.

    Re: Master or Slave?

Easier than jacking up the girl, I just checked the level in the reservoir and it's exactly where I left it 7 months ago.

So I guess I'm looking at bad seals at the master. Do you concur?

    Re: Master or Slave?

Update...the level in the reservoir WAS down. I rebuilt the master and bled it by forcing fluid down under pressure (the syringe trick).

All is well and she's back on the road!
