I am having a problem getting the driveshaft back into the trans, I made the switch from smooth to ribcase, it only goes in about an inch before it stops and it seems to be contacting something inside the trans, has anyone ever experienced this?

Is it a different driveshaft for the ribcase (unfortunatley I don't know what year the trans came from) because I can slide it all the way into the smoothcase trans?

Craig, 

It maybe the spines are not lining up between the two. The nose of the drive shaft "will" slip into the tail about an inch or so.  If you haven't tried this yet, put the gearbox in first gear and then rotate the drive shaft clockwise or anti-clockwise small amounts at a time. Try it, this may get them to engage. If the gearbox isn't in gear you could be simply not able to mesh them, both turning together male to male.

I tried and it still seems to have something that stops it. I took some pictures from the dif to the trans from inside the tunnel and will look at those. I also stuck a small screwdriver down the tailshaft and could only go in the same distance so I am wondering if a broken yoke could be jammed in there. The person I got the trans from said the trans was good so I installed it and thought I had the wrong driveshaft but that doesn't seem to matter so technically the trans is good but the output to the driveshaft may need some work and will have to pull the motor again. I will let you know what I find out, I thought/hoped I was missing something easy.

 FYI/Update 

I did get a chance to pull the engine and trans and after pulling the tailshaft apart I found someone had cut down a yoke and slipped it in so after I removed that and put everything back together the drive shaft slips on with no problems.

OH!!  now i get it (sorry, slow on the uptake) -- MAN!  do I have a TON of DPOs on my car then... haha!  She's in good hands now though.
