    Help (tach wire)

If anyone knows where the white wire with the black strip (from the tachometer) goes, I would appreciate it.  I traced it from the tach to under the bonnet where it has been cut.  Tach has not worked since owned, now I think I know why, this cut wire.

Sorry should have said,....it's a 1977 MGB.  The engine is not original and probably an older engine.  The distibutor cap had a notch in the base where a 77 mgb does not.  Help?

    Re: Help (tach wire)

Splice some wire on and connect it to the positive pole of the coil. The same post as the distributor lead attaches to. That should give you a tach reading. You might want to check out the wire with an ohm meter before attaching it, it may have been disconnected because of a short, wouldn't want you to cause any problems when you hook it up again.

    Re: Help (tach wire)

Been out of town for a week,....

I've got a wire going from tach to coil as you described and the tach will work.  However it seems to be reading double the actual rpm's.  For example, at idle the tach is reading close to 2000.  I may have tach issues because it does seem to flicker, but I was happy just to see the needle move at the time.

Also, does anyone have a part number for an alternator replacement that might be local for me.  i.e. Autozone, Advanced Auto, Pep Boys, etc.
