Horn and Signal indicator steering column Unit

    Hi All,

I have bided and won a used Horn/Signal Indicator in ebay, I am planning to install in my TR3A.  However my mechanic told me that the self-cancellation function doesn't work and he showed me by turning the unit and the cancellation did not go back to the original position.  I have 2 questions below :-

    1) Do i have to install the Horn/Signal indicator to the steering column and connect the wires connections to know if the self-cancellation function is working or not?

    2) If it's not working, is there any part i need to replace to make it work ?

     Thanks in advance !

I know nothing about a TR3A however, is there a cam on the steering shaft to ENGAGE anything on that switch?

    leslie,

No, you don't have to install it to see if the cancellation feature works. It's completely mechanical. But, if yor mechanic isn't familiar with these on-the -collumn switches it is perhaps fooling him. You have to know what to hold and what to twist.. I have repaired them a number of times. If this continues to bedevil you contact me through my web site.

    Hi Motorbill66,

I would like to say thank you because after reading your response, i tried to hold and twist my unit in many different ways, and you are right about it.  you need to know what to hold and what to twist.  my unit actually working !!! I am so glad !

    Thanks again !

Re: Horn and Signal indicator steering column Unit

In a slight hijacking of this thread, is it true that since my steering box on my TR3B was previously changed to rack and pinion, I can no longer use the control head on my wheel. A PO had made this conversion, and I have two dashboard switches for horn and turn signal.

    Hello.....All,

I am dissapointed because when i almost get my car done, found and bought the correct steering, horn etc etc.  I just realised that the steering was changed to Rack and Pinion by the previous owner.  My mechanic just told me that i am not able to use the orginal steering, horn and indicator that i just found and bought.  I have to used back the current steering which is motolita :(

Can anyone help ??  Is my mechanic correct ??  I really want to get back to original steering and horn.

    Thanks in advance !!

    Hi Leslie

I`m certainly not into electronics, but with the tiny elec stuff you get these days there might perhaps be an option to put a small radio transmitter in the tiny room behind the steering wheel.  I`ll investigate more into this.

Re: Horn and Signal indicator steering column Unit

If you have rack and pinion conversion then your horn and signals will need to be rerouted, I also have a Moto-Lita wheel and have drilled a hole in the bottom and added coiled wire for my horn.  On the dash I have added a toggle switch for my signals.

You can alway go back to worn and peg steering, you can find a box and all the bits and pieces on E-bay.

    Good Luck

Re: Horn and Signal indicator steering column Unit

I'm afraid that the way the rack and pinion units are constructed nearly eliminates any possibility of using the column mounted signals. With enough research and engineering, plus some fabrication, I'm sure it can be accomplished. Like Enzo Ferrari said, "What can be concieved can be created." He just didn't mention the price!

Now, I know for a fact that this can be done. My first car was a 1958 MG Magnette saloon. It had the center mounted signals and horn, and guess what.... It was a rack and pinion system! The stator tube had to go all the way down throuigh the pinion gear and shaft and exit the bottom of the rack. The TR uses U-Joints in the shaft, which would complicate the situation. We are used to fabricating whatever you want to finance in our shop, and I'm sure we could do this too. But the invoice would be open ended, and the research and design work would have to be funded. That's why the switches are mounted on the dash!
