    O/D rear casing leak

Can anyone tell me if the rear flange nut must come off in order to seperate th rear casing from the OD. There is no gasket between the brake ring and the rear casing so I was going to put a bead of something gasket like to seal it. Does the rear motion shaft come away with the casing?

    Greg,

What year and model Austin Healey do you have?

Tis a 62 MKll, the weep is minor however before I load the beast back on the chassis I should remedy the situation. Thanks for the reply!

    Greg,

I suppose that technically speaking, you don't have to remove the rear flange nut. I took a while to answer this because I've never done that. In short, other than working on the electrical part of an O/D, my advice is that if you do anything to one, be prepared to do EVERYTHING to one. They are a bit complex and mysterious, though certainly not beyond comprehension. The parts can be fiddly, and hard to contain. That's why there are guys who specialize in just this area, like John Esposito at Quantum Mechanics.

When trying to keep it all together, work with the whole gearbox vertically positioned, bell housing down. If you've got a manual, live with it for a few days untill you feel you know what to expect. If not, by all means, get one. Good luck.

    motorbill,

Thanks for the advice.I will be going at it this weekend and let you know of the results. I have asked this question at many venues and have had only your response.I certainly have a Healey shop manual and the procedure they outline says simply remove the rear casing. When exploring the exploded views in both the Healey manual and the Moss parts catalogue it appeared the output shaft assembly may come away as a unit, hence my question.I certainly agree that this is a bit of tricky buisness .Thanks again!
