Camshaft, Improved Tapered Lobe Design
The original design of the T-series XPAG camshaft was prone to galling or spalling wear where the cam lobe and tappet interface. This accelerated wear would shorten the service life of the camshaft - a problem indicative of many classic engines, not just the XPAG.
Through extensive R&D and collaboration with manufacturers, we are now able to offer an improved XPAG camshaft with a tapered lobe design, reducing the unnecessary wear this part experiences and extending its service life significantly.
To fix the issue of galling with the OEM design, the tappets needed to be induced to rotate properly, which meant offsetting the contact point of the cam lobe from the axis of the tappet. This was done via a 'sloped' grind on the cam lobe and a crowned contact face on the tappet, creating the proper torque for rotation and spreading out the contact area over the tappet in a circular pattern when in use. The original nose radius was also increased as the OEM design would squeeze out the oil film while in operation, promoting wear.
After much experimentation, our engineers were able to produce a camshaft design that addresses these issues while increasing performance, resulting in this new and improved camshaft with a tapered or sloped lobe grind and a larger nose radius.
Note: Must use tappet set 433-365 which is designed specifically for tapered lobe cams.
