How To Test Your Ignition Coil

This video describes a simple and easy one man procedure to test if your coil is firing properly.

When your coil is operating it receives current from your ignition switch. Current flows through the coil’s primary winding to the points. When that flow is broken, (i.e. the points open) the coil releases a spark via its secondary winding that comes out the top of the coil.

To test if the coil is working:

  1. Remove the wire that goes from your coil to the points.
  2. Put a small length of jumper wire on that post of the coil.
  3. Place the large secondary wire from your coil near ground.
  4. Tap the jumper wire on ground.

Each time to create and break ground, the coil should fire once. This coil tests just fine.
