Complete Wire Wheel Kit, XK120-140
Think of wire wheels, splined mounting hubs, and knock-offs as inter-related wear items that should be replaced as a unit. Indeed, it would be a false economy to install new wire wheels on worn splined hubs, and vice versa. The same is true of worn knock-offs. That's why we've assembled convenient kits that include wheels, splined hubs, knock-offs, wheel bearings, grease seals and associated hardware in one shot. Both kits include 60-spoke chrome wire wheels.
This kit is intended to replace worn parts on cars originally equipped with wire wheels; it is not a conversion kit, although it is a good place to start. When using this kit for conversion purposes, first consider the following:
The XK120 spare wheel ËÇ£pocketËÇ¥ differs in height between steel-wheel and wire-wheel cars as wire wheels have a longer center hub. To accommodate a spare wheel, this means the trunk/boot floor above the spare wheel must be modified or replaced with the wire wheel version (Part BD7778), which requires welding. (This is not an issue for XK140s, as the ËÇ£pocketËÇ¥ will accommodate both wheel types.) Also, this kit will not fit early XK120 with the ENV rear axle, which can be identified by the lack of a removable rear cover.
When using this kit to convert a steel-wheel car to wire wheels, you will also need the following:
Wire-wheel specification brake drums (C6024 x 2 front, C6025 x 2 rear).
A fifth wire wheel (part number 37-0223/1) to use as a spare.
A knock-off hammer (386-110 is the original Thor copper-and-rawhide version ËÇô best for show -- and 386-180 is a lead version thatËÇÖs kinder to knock-offs and best for daily use).
A spare tire hold-down suitable for wire wheels (BD7766 for XK120; BD9583 for XK140).
If the car was equipped with wheel spats (which cannot be used with wire wheels, by the way), fender beads BD7769/0 will be required to finish the groove left by the spats.
